Dylan Toymaker is the primary artist for all Crystal Cradle Inc. products. He is a multimedia artist, working with digital 2D, electronics, community activation, recycled materials sculpture, lighting design and installations.
Dylan has been exploring art and electronics since childhood. He grew up in a suburb of Edmonton, Alberta, attended the University of Alberta, and recieved a B.A. in Anthropology with a minor in Art and Design. He developed his craft more fully during his time in Toronto, Ontario. And then he wrapped it all up into a van to travel North America for 5 years. Now based in Edmonton again, he is enjoying setting up a larger scale studio than ever before.
My art is hand-crafted one piece at a time. I endeavour to maximize energy efficiency in both the production and function of my creations. The art jewelery is created through a variety of cold-connection techniques, mostly wire and hand tool manipulation. The Metavore creature sculptures and LED decorative lamps are created with a combination of cold-connection and electronic soldering techniques. The parasols and umbrellas are painted using hand-cut stencils and an airbrush.
The materials that I use are often discarded metal and electronic scrap. Some patrons send their dead computers and bicycles to me to be re-born as creatures of art. Standard parts like hard-drive disks and bicycle gears allow me to create themes in my art, like coffee-can lanterns or bike gear pendants. My choice of re-purposed materials and my commitment to energy efficiency both reflect my values of creativity and eco-consciousness.
